There are so many reports of environmental disasters the news is no longer shocking. We know that the forests are burning all over the planet but somehow, it‘s not important. From our point of view these reports are very worrying and should concern us all. When a forest catches on fire it releases huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, this in turn speeds up the overall effect of global warming. All over the world wood for construction is harder and harder to find. This increases the demand for wood and causes even more logging in natural forests. The rainforest in Brazil, the forest in the Ukraine, the fires in Madagascar and the plan to clear the rainforest in the Congo increasing the impact on Mama Earth. We preach this like an endless prayer falling mainly on deaf ears. Trees are not only Carbon C02 banks, but they are also essential to our existence. Trees are responsible for making the very air we breathe. Breathing is key. We must think every tree that is cut reduces the oxygen that we take for granted.

Mama Earth has often been criticized in the past for the commercial planting of timber, in our case mahogany and teak. „This kind of thing doesn’t ‘t fit into a reforestation project,“ was the tenor. Instead of massive tree planting, programs were negotiated in conferences to ensure sustainable forest management. But little has been done in terms of planting trees.

Our timber concept stands and is merely multiplied. In Monkayo and Montevista, more than 120,000 mahogany trees are growing on land that was previously unused farmland. But there is also enough land available in our new Patag planting area because the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has transferred 500 hectares to us, of which we have only planted barely 70 hectares (as of October 2021). The Mama Earth Foundation is establishing sustainable forestry there, which will provide long-term employment for local residents. That‘s why our office will be located there.

As you know it, here comes my recommendation: you should grow with us. Buy an endemic tree with a great gift card (7,50 Euro) or a mahogany tree as an investment (15 Euro). You can also sign up for our mahogany tree savings contract (10 Euro a month for 100 mahogany trees) or buy 200 or more trees right away. Everything is possible.

Mangroves

The counter for the Malizia Mangrove Park project junp over 400,000. If you do not find this amount in your petty cash, do not be sad. Come and visit us to enjoy your day in mangroves. And if you are a foreigner you are lucky because it is not allowed for you to buy land in the Philippines.

Our mangrove plantations for Click-a-tree are ground-based. Here we are already in the second round, while the first hectare (8,000 mangroves) is still in progress. Since we are only planting in surveyed areas, and only after DENR (Department of Envirionment and Natural Resources) approval, the first step is taking a bit longer, especially since our nurseries also need to be established near the plantations. Additionally, there is a nice obstacle to overcome: Filipinos love meetings. Since time is of the essence, especially in the provinces, these usually consist of long waiting and short speaking times. But here, the focus is on the fun of sitting together, not the topic.

Ancient pagatpat mangroves give the shoreline landscape in San Isidro a fairytale character.

It is especially important in this coastal strip, because here are several nests of sea turtles, which are known to lay their eggs always in the beach strip at the sea. When they come ashore to lay their eggs, and later when the young hatch, the beach should be free of plastic waste to allow barrier-free access to the sea.

And please don‘t forget that we will have chairs made from the collected plastic for the Nasa Elementary School in San Isidro. This school is for the children of the Indigenous People Community, which has rudimentary seating. The students are in desperate need of the chairs.

There is an impressive amount of work ahead of us, but we have the full support of Mayor Yustina Yu here, who has been committed to conservation for many decades. However, at only 86 years old, she already wants to step down and is now running for second mayor (vice major). But the mayoralty is trimmed to conservation through the many decades, so afforestation continues. Her government district is also home to Mount Hamiliton , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because the hundreds of years old trees there grow only waist high due to the high ore content in the rock. Mama Earth‘s Managing Director Simon did not miss the opportunity to climb to the top. His comment: „Indescribable to stand like a Goliath in the forest and look over the crowns. Part of the climb was vertical. Climbing a 200-meter steep face just clinging to roots was so exhausting that I would refrain from doing a second climb.“
